describe-key-briefly doesn't work for popup menus

If I do "C-h c" followed by C-mouse-2 and select "Remove text properties,
the minibuffer just displays:

Describe key (or click or menu item): C-down mouse-2 rm

I then have to click mouse-1 to change it, when the message:

<C-down-mouse-2> <ra> at that spot runs the command facemenu-remove-all

appears subliminally and ends up in the messages buffer.
