Hmmm, it looks reasonable enough -- if I just do "cat /tmp/output" in an
Emacs shell session, it displays correctly (only showing one short
line).

Is the shell buffer in "mac line-ending mode"?  I guess that might
confuse things a lot (RET characters are being used for the ascii
graphics, but RET is newline in mac mode...).
