Hmm, shouldn't configure just be using AC_CHECK_SIZEOF(long) instead of
defining such things in the m/ files?
It would be cleaner, but that is not how we have traditionally handled
it, and this is not the best time to change that mechanism.
So I wonder what is going on with the amdx86-64 configuration:
why someone else expected it to have 64-bit longs, while Stefan's
machine uses 32-bit longs.
