S-down to highlight has vanished

Please write in English if possible, because the Emacs maintainers
usually do not have translators to read other languages for them.

Your bug report will be posted to the address@hidden mailing list.

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I filed another report about this a few days ago, but now I have some
very strange new data:

EXPECTED RESULT:

S-down in a gnus summary buffer would highlight the current
line and move the cursor down. S-up would do the same but
move up, S-left and S-right would highlight one more char.

WHAT HAPPENED:

I upgraded my Mandriva to the newer Gnome, and as you will
see elsewhere in this report, I am using the emacs 22 gtk
edition. After the upgrade, this feature was lost, but then
it came back; I thought it was because I had selected the
         Options/ActiveRegionHighlighting -- whatever I did, S-down
         came back.

Noticing that mandriva now had a package for the Emacs-22
snapshot, I installed that, and it also had the desired S-down
         behaviour and Options/ActiveRegionHighlighting was already
checked. Unfortunately it had other problems such as the wrong
tool menu for Gnus *Group* so I went back to the CVS and did an
update -AdP and rebuilt new binaries.

the new binaries have ActiveRegionHighlighting checked, but
it does _not_ highlight with S-down. If I do an F1-k and press
S-down, it tells me the command is "down, remapped from S-down"

What happened? If I run the other Mandriva-compiled emacs22, it will
highlight, but not in this one (compiled to the same prefix=/usr)
.. how could one binary have different user-options than the other?
Or does this mean I perhaps overlooked some gtk-library needed for the
compile?

If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
    `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
If you would like to further debug the crash, please read the file
/usr/share/emacs/22.0.90/etc/DEBUG for instructions.
