In this case, one file was UTF-8, the other was pure 7-bit ASCII.  I
think this case is also very common.

And then there's the case when one file is ISO-88590-x, the other is
UTF-8; also very common.

Etc., etc.

Patches welcome, as always (but please hold your horses until after
the release).
