So I see. I just read through that thread and see that:
1) it doesn't touch upon the mismatch between highlighting and
queries in a query-replace-regexp; it's only talking about searching,
not replacing, and
2) the thread died out without any decision having been made.
I think that both string searches and regular expression searches
should have "space-means-space" functionality by default, with there
being 2 separate customisable settings to toggle
space-means-space-in-string-search and
space-means-space-in-regexp-search. There's no need to a special
keystroke to toggle these 'on the fly' - just have the customisable.
