narrowing *shell* buffer causes odd error

I just tried to delete the contents of my *shell* buffer with C-x h C-w, 
because it was getting too big.

The buffer appeared empty, so I guessed it had worked.

Later, I tried hitting return to get a new prompt and saw:

  comint-snapshot-last-prompt()

I couldn't work out what was going on, until I spotted that it said
'Narrow' on the mode-line.

Widening the buffer allowed me to carry on working as normal.

I don't know how the buffer got narrowed - maybe I didn't type what I
thought I did, but rather than the cryptic "args out of range" error,
could it say something about how the buffer is narrowed, preventing
the mode from functioning properly?
