Details:

The XEmacs version is 

"21.4 (patch 17) \"Jumbo Shrimp\" XEmacs Lucid"

[the one that comes with Debian Sarge].  

replace-regexp-in-string takes only three arguments in this XEmacs, but
muse-replace-regexp-in-string calls it with five.

Reversing the order of the first two cond clauses works for XEmacs  21.4, but
I don't know if this is does the right thing for other XEmacsen
