Keeping in mind that the majority of my Win32 programming is in .NET, from what I recall the COM call that I swapped it for has been the preferred way to do it since Windows 95 at least (I wouldn't be all that surprised if versions of NT <= 4.0 would also support it, not that I think anyone is worried about supporting NT that far back...).
