One thing, I moved player->user_callback(...) before fluid_synth_handle_midi_event. Because I sometimes also wanted to adjust the pan, the volume, and instruments on the channel played for a note.
I can also image that someone (maybe me too) wants to alter the midi events, supress notes or change pitch an octave up at a certain point.

(We juggle balls with three people, one in the middle and one on each side. The midi notes should be played on the side of the person juggling at that specific moment and each juggler represents a certain instrument.)

Our show is may, 21th. I will upload the movie recording afterwards, and post it here.

That sounds like a very cool application!  FYI, here's an updated
patch -- it turns out I also need to feed back the executing track to
the application layer, as only certain tracks should receive
visualization (Jonathan, you may run into the same thing, depending on
your midi sources)
