A voice represents a single audio sample being played back.  A single note-on event may trigger several voices, if an instrument has layered samples.

Thanks for the clarification. 

That explains things sufficiently that I can proceed with the testing.  It appears I was thinking in a 'macro' perspective, unaware that there was a 'micro' perspective.
