I tested HeiseiKakuGo-W5-Acro with ftview (on NetBSD-1.4.2, egcs-1.1.1).  
It fails and dumps core.

This font file can obtein without any fees as you know.
It is not CID, but OpenType/CFF.

P.S.
Apple Japan says that a high-quality Japanese font family,
Hiragino(Opentype/CFF), will bundle into the Japanese edition of Mac OS X.
