FT_Get_Char_Index() returns 0 for char(0x020)

Can anyone explain why, for certain fonts (Adobe Type 1 fonts: 
Palatino, Impact, etc.), FT_Get_Char_Index(f->face, ' ') would return 
0?

Is it possible that some fonts don't actually define a valid 
character for "space" (hex 0x020)?  If so, what's the 
standard/recommended procedure?
