Ah.  I didn't understand what these flags were intended for.  That makes 
quite a bit of difference.

I spent several days experimenting with different filters; the current 
ones work best at 100dpi and above.  Lower dpi values present too large a 
pixel area, and even the slightest color is quite visible.

I'm wondering if the autohinter adjusts the widths of other font elements 
to match changes made to the stems  For example, in a gothic font it would 
be nice to see all of the stroke widths match precisely after hinting.
