This is comparing apples with oranges.  Pango is a library on top of
FreeType.

???  There seems to be a major misunderstanding.  libXFt2 uses
FreeType to provide font services to X11.

Virtually everything.

Pango is heavily based on glib.  For embedded systems, glib can't be
used since tight memory situations must be handled gracefully.  The
idea is not to reinvent the wheel but to take the best of Pango and
ICU, producing something which has a small memory footprint and a
well-defined behaviour if memory is exhausted.
