The fringing depends on the filter.  For well-instructed glyf fonts the
legacy filter gives the best results.  For type1 or cff fonts, or when
rendering glyf fonts either with the autofit module or w/o any fitting
freetype's default filter, IMO, gives the best results.

I use these four fontconfig files to acomplish that:

Attachment: 10-autohint-cff.conf

Attachment: 10-hintstyle-by-fontformat.conf
Description: Text Data

Attachment: 99-filter-by-hints.conf
Description: Text Data

Not every app will honour the filter choice; most distributions'
versions of cairo will, some versions of xft may.  I *think* current
versions of qt do, but I'm not certain of that.
