I'm assuming this screenshot is a Windows Cleartype rendering using 
ttfautohint?  If so, it's possible that the filtering that Cleartype 
applies post-hinting is reducing very thin vertical stems to almost 
nothing.  I ran into this same issue as I was playing around with 
different filters for my patches.  It would be interesting to see what 
the same screenshot would look like without any of the filtering.
