I'm assuming this screenshot is a Windows Cleartype rendering using ttfautohint? If so, it's possible that the filtering that Cleartype applies post-hinting is reducing very thin vertical stems to almost nothing. I ran into this same issue as I was playing around with different filters for my patches. It would be interesting to see what the same screenshot would look like without any of the filtering.

Is it possible that the solution is to tweak the prep code that
ttfautohint generates?
I have to investigate this.  It looks like a bug since the horizontal
stems don't appear extremely thin.  What's the font of the second
image on this page (`breeds Loneliness...')?  Can you send it to me or
give a link?
