Unless I'm missing something, those bugs are entirely about Debian & Ubuntu
packaging problems with nothing for upstream to do.
The only upstream complaint I see is that freetype-config still exists,
and hasn't been completely removed now in favor of the pkg-config files.
As the downstream maintainer of the freetype packages for Solaris, I've not
had any trouble packaging our builds of 32-bit & 64-bit freetype to both be
installed at the same time, but we have a different multilib model & packaging
system than Debian/Ubuntu does.
