Admittedly, symbol versioning is very poorly supported and documented

- autoconf does not have a macro to check if the linker supports it.

- libtool should have known that Solaris has a different option than GNU LD, but does not care

- GNU LD introduced wildcards, is that a problem for Solaris?

- Should versions without new symbols be listed?

- Can I use reverse chronological order, which is more readable?

- Apparently, version tags have specific format: NAME_#.#.#, never documented

- Should the version number correspond to  SO.version?

All in all, this looks like something to stay away from.
