The title says it all.

  $ mkdir freetype2.compiled
  $ cd freetype2.compiled
(...)

Reason of the failure is that there isn't a `markdown' subdirectory.
To have a functional `reference' directory tree I thus suggest that
the files and directories from srcdir's `reference' tree get copied to
builddir.

Should be fixed in the attached patch. Please test!
