You can't. Italic is a different design from Roman (upright) style. There is
as much difference between Times Roman and Times Italic than there is
between Times and Clarendon (OK, not really, the metrics are similar for the
Times family, while they are usualy widely different between family; Times
is a family). Look closely at the glyphs and you'll understand it.

What you can do is to fake Oblique style, by slanting, that is by using a
transformation matrix where the resulting x is original x + about 15% of y.
Usualy, sans serif families like Arial do not have Italic styles, only
Oblique; and the Oblique style is very much like the slanted version of the
Roman one.
