It's always hard to get developers interested in a bug that you found in a year-old version of freetype 2.2.1 from FC6. Please try freetype 2.3.1. You can download freetype-2.3.1-1.fc7.src.rpm from Fedora development and rebuild it with no problem on FC6. You can also find some useful info in this FC6 bug report.
