Aha - I've rarely built things from CVS.

2.3.7 didn't ask for make 3.80+, but freetype CVS did. It turned out that in
the meantime, MSYS has upgraded from 3.79.1 to 3.81, so I shouldn't have
this problem anymore. Thanks for letting me know - I wouldn't have made the
connection and would have kept my workaround forever.
