This from the newsgroups. Apologies if this is a duplicate. Although it's
disappointing that they are talking about "open source", I'd appreciate it
a summary if anyone on the list goes.

Anyone who's at all interested in Open Source will know that Central
Scotland Police are one of the first bodies in Western Europe to roll out
linux to hundreds of desktops. They are going to be talking about their
experience of doing this at an event hosted by ScotlandIS next week. If
you're interested in going, get your booking in today!

Open Source Technology
Hilton Strathclyde Hotel, Phoenix Crescent, Bellshill, North Lanarkshire
19th November 2002 6.30 - 9.00pm

By Jim Jarvie, IT Manager, Central Scotland Police and
Freddie Moran, IBM Distinguished Engineer
Open Source Technology is stepping out of the shadows! Previously seen as
the reserve of the "tecchies" who built the Internet and the World Wide Web,
Open Source technology is now breaking out into the commercial world - and
that's changing all the rules and the costs.
Jim Jarvie, IT Manager, Central Scotland Police, has used Open Source
software for a number of years and is notable for its extensive use within
Central Scotland Police. Jim will talk about why Open Source is a first
choice when looking for solutions to everyday problems - using examples
applicable to Industry as well as the Public Sector. Jim will also share
his experiences of the benefits obtained, which go beyond simple cost
savings.
Companies like IBM and Oracle are now committed to support Open Source
technology, and businesses are reaping the benefits in terms of costs,
flexibility, improved robustness and scalability. This is against a
background of increasing public sector interest worldwide.

Freddie Moran, IBM Distinguished Engineer will talk about "IBM and eScience"
and the importance of Open Standards to the rapid evolution of the Internet
and GRID. He will also address the increasing complexities associated with
technology and infrastructure, and what's being done to get real business
value from today's technology.

Cost £25 + vat including buffet supper
