Hello all.

I'm planning to run a Skillswap[1] training event entitled 'Introduction
to GNU/Linux' in a couple of weeks, and I wanted to ask if anybody has any
suggestions what to include (or even what not to include!).

The session will last about 3 hours, and basically consists of people
sitting at computers and/or looking at a projection screen at the front of
the room. The audience will primarily be Linux newbies, but generally with
a technical background (i.e. most if not all involved in web
development/design).

I was thinking of starting with a slideshow presentation[2] covering e.g.

Brief history of GNU/Linux
Brief philosophy of GNU/Linux
'Structure' of GNU/Linux (kernel->shell->XWindows->desktop environment)
Pros and cons of GNU/Linux

Followed by a hands-on session where I would get them all to boot Knoppix
on their machines. Then cover:

1) Desktop
KDE desktop layout (virtual desktops etc.)
Filesystem structure
Applications (OpenOffice, Mozilla, KMail, the GIMP). Suggestions?

2) Server
Talk about programming (esp. PHP and other 'web' languages)
Show them virtual consoles, and then go though some common command line
scenarios (ls -l, pwd, chmod, less, man, su, whoami, text editors).
Others?

Summary (including Windows->Linux equivalents for e.g. Office and
Outlook, 'Linux Myths') and Q&A

I realise that the 'Server' section will probably be too advanced for a
lot of people, but I figure that as they're mainly web-people, then their
first experience of GNU/Linux is likely to be via someone else's server.
And if they got lost/bored, they can always just play games on Knoppix
while I drone on :)

So, do you think this sounds reasonable? What should I add or omit?
Anything I should especially emphasise or de-emphasise?

Thanks,

-T.

[2] As in 'PowerPoint', but what is the correct generic term for this?
