I've updated this page slightly today - in particular, the information
about SVG was out-of-date and SVG support in the free software world
seems much better than it was when the page was originally written
(especially with Mozilla on the verge of releasing a Firefox with native
SVG support).

The winning solution to authoring Flash on free software appears to be
getting Inkscape up to speed with animation, using SVG natively on free
software and then being able to convert it into Flash (this obviously
has no bearing on the playing Flash problem).

SMIL then comes into this picture by allowing proper synchronisation
between different media (SVG, audio, video, etc.) which is probably a
necessity to replicate all the functions of Flash.

Cheers,

Alex.
