Ah, i see what you mean now.

<http://ftp.debian.org/dists/etch> has:

[   ] Contents-amd64.gz       16-Nov-2006 15:20  10.0M

One can also search <http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages>
and then there are commandline tools like apt-file for searching 
the package servers.

ok, a list like that is a good starting point for any further scripting.
