These are defaults added during the first run

No, absolutely not

The current settings cannot be downgraded to 1.2.8.x and can be lost.
Please make a copy of .gnome-commander/gnome-commander.xml cfg file if
you like to play with both 1.4 and 1.2.8 versions at the same time.
