Hi John,

This is true. There are two halfway reasonable ways to get to the
airport via public transport on Sundays/holidays, though they're not
all particularly fast.

The fastest way is:

1. take the S8 to Ismaning and call the so-called "Ruftaxi" 230 (which
is not a taxi at all, but rather a city bus that only operates its
schedule if someone calls to say they're going to ride it) at
089/9006878-030 minutes before planned departure.
2. Get off at Garching (city, not Forschungszentrum - MVV seems to
indicate it doesn't go that far on holidays) and
3. get on the U-Bahn to Garching Forschungszentrum

This one likely requires the ability to speak German. Not so much fun
if you don't, but maybe there's someone there that can help.

The simplest way is:

1. take the S1 to Unterschleissheim (5 stops) and cross under the
tracks to the bus stop on the east side.
2. catch the 219 to Garching-Hochbrueck (which is the terminus of the
line), then go over the U-Bahn tracks to
3. take the U6 to Garching Forschungszentrum (also the terminus).

(You can walk to the LRZ from the U-Bahn station)

http://mvv-muenchen.de is the local public transport site (you can
view it in several languages, sort of) - the stops you want to enter
from the airport are Flughafen and Garching-Forschungszentrum if you
want to route yourself.
