A couple of days back I was at West Bengal University of Technology
(http://www.wbut.net/) to pick up a few Fedora Core 6 DVDs sent by Red
Hat. What I saw there was amazing. Every computer (including desktops)
in the university was running on Ubuntu. When I say every computer, I
include computers used by the librarian, the registration department,
the clerks, and everybody else.
I am told that they also have a policy not to allow any non-free
software in the university network. If you bring in a laptop running
on some non-free operating system, they flatly refuse to let you use
the campus network -- no LAN, no Internet through the university
infrastructure. If you ask for support for your non-free software,
they slap the policy document in your face saying: "Sir, we do not
support Windows!".
I am off to Rajabazar Science College now for making final
preparations for a series of GCC workshops (organized by Calcutta
University and ILUG-Cal) starting from this Saturday.
Wish you all a very happy summer.
Cheerio,
Debarshi
