Follow-up Comment #8:
This should be fixed now as of 43e7d50. The problem was DIST_SUBDIRS was
overriding SUBDIRS due the conditional build directories like cygnal. All
optional directories were getting included twice, producing the error as the
first pass removed the Makefiles, the second pass couldn't find one, so
bailed. Automake is smart enough to grok the optional directories correctly,
so we were breaking that.
