Status: Confirmed => Ready For Test

Follow-up Comment #9:
The way you are setting them in your environment will override the configure
determined settings. The way it's supposed to work is to let configure do it's
thing, then supply any modified CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS on the command line to make.
So we are honoring user flags by forcibly redefining them when you configure.
