As suggested by Paul O'Malley in IRC I installed and briefly tested GNU
IceCat from http://gnuzilla.gnu.org/download/icecat_3-g1-1_i386.deb
Aside from a number of error messages in the terminal, I've had no
problems so far. I was able to install the noscript extention and browse
as I normally would.
Eric...
Ah, this was not just a suggestion to you personally, but a general call
for action. Well, here are my findings (positive and negative):
1. Installing with dpkg -i went flawless.
2. Running it from a terminal has not printed any errors so far.
3. It's not in the GNOME Applications menu.
4. Tools -> Add-ons: "GNU Icecat couldn't retrieve add-ons".
5. Tools -> Add-ons -> Browse All Add-ons: 404 page.
6. HTTPS works, but shouldn't the URL get a yellow background?
7. http://gnuzilla.gnu.org/ talks about privacy protection features, but
the test pages don't seem to do anything.
8. Importing bookmarks from Epiphany though HTML works, except for one,
but that Epiphany's fault.
9. Help -> About: looks clumsy because top of scrolling text is half
covered by logo instead of nice fade effect that FF has.
10. There's no logo in the title bar.
11. Help -> Help Contents: "Address Not Found"
(http://gnuzilla.gnu.orgfirefoxhelp/).
12. Help -> Release Notes: 404 page.
13. No localization (mozilla-firefox-locale-nl-nl has no effect).
14. Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Update: shortcut for "GNU Icecat"
= F
15. It still supports single quotes in password fields (for US Intl.
keyboard layout), unlike Epiphany [1] (and PmWiki [2]).
16. From addons.mozilla.org I could install Greasemonkey, NoScript and
Web Developer, but Firebug complained about compatibility. Installing
Firebug from Add/Remove programs also installs Firefox 2 from the
repositories, but has no effect on IceCat.
I think the more important points are 3 and 5.
