These a really useful questions for me also Wally,

I'm also just changing to gNewSense.
I think the choice that I have made depends my personal needs and taste.
Thank goodness for GNU/Linux for preserving that freedom of choice.

I just tried Windows8 and it is clear that Ubuntu is now beginning to
overtake Windows in design and usability. However I found that the
Ubuntu community was highly centralised. And may be in danger of
defeating its own aims. Plus the fact that for me the desktop was too
simplistic. To the point of irritation.

So I have been using Debian for the past 2 years. A rock solid
development with an inclusive, friendly community. They have also added
some of the 'bells and whistles' used on Ubuntu 12.04. Or it is probably
the other way around.

What attracts me to gNewSense (I like the name). Is that I feel that I
feel in control of my own desktop. Plus the fact that some of the key
people in the development are now listening into your questions.
Basically, the sense of ownership is important for me. Plus the fact
whatever Richard Stallman has said about free software has been borne
out in reality. Windows8 will contain intrusive surveillance, such as
facial recognition, that will be linkable to personal details. With
Apple also moving in the same direction. So using free software makes
sense to me.

There are also fantastic projects, such as Gimp and CiviCRM based around
the free software system.

Just my slant on things. Hope this helps.

John
