Yes.. you can use SMS as well... for raw data, you may use the -8 
undocumented option in gnokii so the bytes are not packed in 7 bits and
the stream is treated as unmodifiable...

Your phone doesn't support data calls. You have to choose another
model. BTW modern phones contain a full modem emulator, so you
can establish data calls without gnokii.
