[PATCH] allow to read configuration from memory instead of a file

Hello,

Attached to this mail is a patch that allows to read the configuration
from memory, instead of only from a file.

I had to add a few more strdup's and one strndup, it should be easy
enough to create a wrapper in case one or the other doesn't exist.
