7110 problem

Hello,

I am new to the list and gnokii. I have a nokia 7110 and planning on buying a 6260 and leave my old 7110 connected with my linux server (fedora core 2) for sms purposes. But I have basic problems...

First I bought a noname dlr-3p cable and tried it with gnokii on linux and with several 7110 programs on my windows box. It didnot work so I bought an original nokai dlr-3p cable So from the start I can say that my problems are not related to the cable at the moment because now I am working with brand new original cable.

I searched the list archives and as far as I can understand it looks like the phone is not talking back to gnokii. Thus I have a few questions:

-I use the phone's port looks fine and when I plug an earpiece I can make phone calls handsfree. However when I plug the earpiece the screen lightens up and the phone "understands" that the earpiece is plugged in. Nothing happens to the phone when I plug the data cable in (especially when first plugged into the computer's serial port) Is this normal? Do I have to change some setting on the phone?

-Both my linux and windows boxes have the same mainboard Asus A7V8X. I did suspect that something with the serial port (irq?) may be the reason of the problem. any experiences on that kind of thing? (However once I did connect a cisco router to my windows box through its serial port and it worked)

-Is there a minimal way of checking the transmission between two ports? (just like pinging is the minimal network connectivity test)

Any ideas/experiences?
