Hi!
What about a naming scheme like
linux--linus--2.4
linux--alan--2.4
containing only "full" releases as tags of
linux-pre--linus--2.4
linux-pre--alan--2.4
and maybe having also
linux-test--linus--2.4
although those could also go in linux-pre (and maybe have linux-test as
tags of linux-pre).
