I don't think the depth issue is the worst problem -- it's the total
length of the path, no? Hence all the questions about normalising the
branch/version names in the archive (from
cat/cat--branch/cat--branch--version to cat/branch/version, possibly
with cat/=null/version in case of empty branch labels).
