Um, isn't that what the ++saved... directories following a build-config do?
Preserve your originals.

I had the same reaction when I started using configs.  "Bummer, forgot to
save that change before switching configs.  Oh, wait.  What's this
++saved... directory.  Ah, there it is.  Whew!"
