fonts in lyrics

I'm setting a piece with latin words interspersed with the English
ones, and I want the latin to be in italics.  Putting them in a TeX
\it{...} didn't work, so I looked at the examples.
input/test/lyrics.ly has something that looks useful, but when I try
to run it I get:
