I wanted to find:

...aabbd...
...bd...
etc

but not find:
...aaaaac...
...aabbc...
...bc...
etc

I don't need it anymore because I changed [^c] to [xyz] and manually skipped
the misses.  Actually:
a=space
b=tab
c=#
d=anything else

The expression "[ab]+[^c]" finds "aac"; even though...
