Should I use this or build from some repository somewhere? Will any version

i think the tarball from 2015 lacks "gnucap-conf" which is used in the
plugin makefile. so, at least it will not work out-of-the-box.
please build gnucap from git. the tagged versions (latest: 20160724) are
considered stable snapshots. these are all in the master branch.
gnucap-coupling should work with master. if it doesn't, let me know
and/or try the unstable branch.

I just built the snapshot, on configuring I got the following:
Configuring gnucap using --prefix=/usr/local
include
lib
/tmp/ccF64DAK.o: In function `main':
test_readline.cc:(.text+0xe): undefined reference to `readline'
test_readline.cc:(.text+0x1e): undefined reference to `add_history'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
either libtermcap or libreadline is missing - not using readline
modelgen
main
apps

I have readline installed. This is the same issue as described in the
following post fron 2013:
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/gnucap-devel/2013-06/msg00002.html
and I was able to fix it in the same way as described there.
Regards,
Richard
