Sorry for the late answer; I hoped somebody else could answer ;-)

1) You can try; but for the time being, none of the TinyCOBOL samples
  I tried worked. OC complains about "group item cannot have picture
clause".
  If you have problems too, pls enter a bug report with the smallest pgm
which
  reproduce the problem.
2) http://open-cobol.sourceforge.net/open-cobol, but maybe a little
   outdated.
