For your amusement (???) related to previous threads, see IBM' announcement
today of their latest z/OS COBOL compiler at:

Specifically,
"The REDEFINES clause has been enhanced so that for data items that are not
level 01, the subject of the entry can be larger than the data item being
redefined."
