Ok, the scores on the doors for this distinctly unscientific survey are:

1. Current colours, No border.              +1
2. Light blue navigation bar.                  -1
3. Light blue navigation bar and no border. +4 -1
4. Dark grey navigation bar.                   -2
5. Dark grey navigation bar and no border.     -1
6. Light blue top bar.                      +2 
7. Light blue top bar and no border         +1
8. As 7, but with oval logo.                no votes
9. Red theme                                   -2
10. Cool Site of the Day 1994 theme            -2

I wonder if lightening the blue up a bit more on 3. would help with the 
readability problems that Stan was seeing at his end?
