i guess the question what is more efficient, to try the
general case first and the the special afterwards or vice versa
is if you have more matches or more no matches. i think there
are a lot more "no matches". so in one case if you have 1 %
of the general matching:

general case try 100 %
special case try 1%

if you do the special first you have:

special case try 100 %
general case try 99 %

now you say the general case takes a lot more time, so you would
have to look at that
