I reverted this patch and ran the regressions.

The results were good so I added it to the CVS under the
name arend_3_12.5a.

Test results were 33 PASS and 17 FAIL. See regression/BREAKAGE for
the details.  A little faster too at 9705 seconds.

I updated the test results and made a CVS tag rel-3-3-12-pre-5.
