Sorry for the long delay in responding.  Could you please try the above
again, but this time omitting "--mode gtp" for the "Options" prompt?
(That particular option is handled internally by gnugo.el; you can do:

 C-h C-f gnugo RET

to see this mentioned in the documentation for the ‘gnugo’ command.)
