Hi Frans,
Possibly you installed only the 'client' part. The 'client' part, provided that
you also have an internet connection, should be able to connect to the public
database although you should know that is a slow connection.
If instead you selected to connect to a GNUmed database on your machine, then
such a ('server') database needs to first be installed.
Let us know which Linux / Windows you are using and we can help you with more
instructions.
